About

My name is Tobiah Murphy, and I am a current violin student in the Specialist in Music performance program with Professor David Halen at the University of Michigan's School of Music, Theater, and Dance. I completed my BM at the Cleveland Institute of Music, where I studied with Cleveland Orchestra concertmaster William Preucil and my MM at the Conservatory at the University of Missouri - Kansas City, where I studied with concert artist, and current 1st violin of the Miami string quartet, Benny Kim. I particularly enjoy soloing, Irish Fiddling, improvisation, and collaboration with small ensembles. I believe it is important for the artist to interact non-musically with the audience as much as possible. Not only does this aid in the communication of the music to the listener, but seeks to draw them in, to heighten their understanding of what we're doing. I want the uninitiated passerby, not just the seasoned veteran, to be able to fully enjoy each performance and feel as though they were able to take something of great value from it.
