Full program notes

We have seen painters such as Caravaggio and Rembrandt use Chiaroscuro, the dramatic contrast between light and dark, to create three-dimensional volume and drama in their portraits. How is this done in classical music and why does it matter?

We explore this through two vastly different works by French composer Maurice Ravel and Russian composer Sergei Prokofiev.

Ravel: Violin Sonata No.2 (1923-1927)
A 3-movement work inspired by Ravel's trip to America, with musical idioms of jazz and blues.

Prokofiev: Violin Sonata No 1, Op. 80 (1938-1946))
A 4-movement work inspired by Handel’s violin sonatas, a by-product of Prokofiev's experience with WWII.
