Full program notes
Our program wanders through a handful of musical worlds, all tied together by the violin and cello.
We begin with Bach. The prelude comes from the Well-Tempered Clavier, a collection written for keyboard. In this duet version, the flowing lines are shared between our two instruments. What was once ten fingers at a keyboard becomes a musical conversation for two.
Next up are 5 Hungarian Folk Melodies. Bartók loved collecting folk music from villages across Eastern Europe. These little pieces keep that rustic spirit. Some are playful some are feel wistful, all of them have a direct and singing quality.
Reinhold Glière’s duo in 8 movements continues the folk flavor. The music has a gentle lyricism and a hint of old world nostalgia.
Edward Elgar’s Salut d’amour is pure affection in musical form. He wrote it as a gift for his fiancée. The melody is simple, tender, and quietly glowing.
We close with Dvořák’s beloved Humoresque. It is light on its feet and full of charm. A perfect little farewell.
