Full program notes
French composer Debussy was widely regarded as the first impressionist composer, although he did not like to be called “impressionist” at all. His Preludes Book 1 was composed between 1909 December and February 1910. Every prelude has its own name, in the original editions, Debussy put the title at the end of each piece instead of the beginning of them in order to allow the players to experience the music by themselves before being influenced by its title. Most of the preludes were inspired by poems or other art works, for example, prelude no.1 Dancers of Delphi was inspired by a sculpture displayed in the Delphi Archaeological Museum, and prelude no.4 Sounds and Perfumes Mingle in the Evening Air was inspired by Charles Baudelaire's poem Harmonie du soir ("Evening Harmony").
