Full program notes
Mads Tolling is a two-time Grammy Award-winning violinist, formerly with Turtle Island Quartet and Stanley Clarke, and currently with Bob Weir & Wolf Bros.
Dave Mac Nab is one of the highest in-demand guitar players in the Bay Area, and he has been featured in many musical theatre productions, including Wicked and Hamilton.
Mads and Dave have performed together for several years – first as part of the Mads Tolling Quartet, and then in various duo and trio configurations. Their repertoire includes songs from the Mads Men 1960s project, such as “Meet the Flintstones,” “A Taste of Honey” and “Libertango.” The two will also play some of Tolling's original compositions along with contemporary composers such as Bill Frisell and Pee Wee Ellis.
Historical context
Dave and I will dive into the rich tradition of jazz, which include elements of Charlie Parker's bebop jazz from the 1940s, and which go as far as Chick Corea's fusion music from the 1970s. Mads draws from his love of great jazz violinists, who have gone before him, including Stéphane Grappelli, Jean-Luc Ponty, Svend Asmussen, and Stuff Smith.
