The string quartet is the cornerstone of the Groupmuse experience -- small enough to fit in a lot of apartments but possessed of enough depth and dynamism to boast the greatest and largest collection of chamber music out there.
All that said, and though it may not fit in most living rooms: The quintet is no slouch. And. On Friday night, the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center (CMS) is inviting us to the beautiful Alice Tully Hall for a celebration of the different shapes and sounds of the chamber quintet.
We'll begin the undisputed master of the viola quintet (string quartet + viola) - Wolfgang Mozart and his 6th viola quintet. It was written during that last miraculous year of his life and is laden with his infinite depths but also bubbles with his charming and quite-frankly weird sense of humor.
Next is a clarinet quintet (string quartet + clarinet) by Anton Reicha, a close friend and contemporary of Beethoven, he wrote a large body of terrific chamber music but was unfortunately outshined to history by his large-haired buddy.
We'll finish with a cello quintet (string quartet + cello) by late-romantic Russian master Alexander Glazunov.
These 5-sided tales will be spun by some of the best chamber musicians in the world (including, we blush to note, recent Massivemuser Alexi Kenney) and tickets for the feast typically run $50, but this is Groupmuse after all, and CMS is seriously good people so we've got a limited stack for $20! But like all limited stacks, it is limited -- so hustle if you want in!
