Following on the heels of this past weekend's sold-out Night Out, The Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center is rising to the meet the demand of our culture-hungry community of 'musers with yet another Night Out, next Tuesday at 7.30pm.
But whereas our last Night Out was a celebration of the different national voices that constitute the rich culture fabric of Europe, this next one is a howling lament for when nationalism is exploited by the powerful to lead a continent toward the destruction of everything that makes it beautiful and alive.
The evening will featuring three works, all written during the years of The Great War, World War I, all from different corners for the nightmare:
Ernő Dohnányi's Quintet No. 2 in E-flat minor for Piano, Two Violins, Viola, and Cello, Op. 26
Maurice Ravel's Le tombeau de Couperin for Wind Quintet
Edward Elgar's Quintet in A minor for Piano, Two Violins, Viola, and Cello, Op. 84 (1918-19)
These masterpieces take on a particular resonance when cast against the backdrop of the horrors of the trenches, as a testament to the never-ending fight to reclaim our humanity when are systems of governance sacrifice the lives of millions of the nameless on the alter of greed and domination.
One hundred years later, it would be madness not to take to heart those lessons so brutally learned.
Tickets are typically more than $50, but CMS wants us to share in this important evening, so they've made a stack available for more than half off - $25 a pop. But these will most assuredly sell out, so get yours.
And have a great Night Out.
