Stand against the expected with Groupmuse Nights Out, offering deeply discounted tickets to The Oakland Symphony’s "DEFIANCE" at the Paramount Theatre on Friday, October 16 at 7:30 PM. Conducted by Kedrick Armstrong with vocalist B. DeVeaux, this powerful program explores music as an act of resistance—from the atmospheric intensity of Osnat Netzer’s Varium cæli to Karim Al-Zand’s Lamentation on the Disasters of War, a work confronting the devastation of conflict.
The evening then erupts into a protest medley featuring music by The Lumpen, Tracy Chapman, and Lauryn Hill before culminating in Shostakovich’s Symphony No. 11, “The Year 1905.” Written in the aftermath of revolution and filled with tension, grief, fury, and defiance, Shostakovich’s monumental symphony transforms historical upheaval into an overwhelming orchestral experience. Regular tickets average $50, but Groupmuse Nights Out brings them down to just $20—and even less for Supermusers. 🎶🔥
