What’s the music?
Compass Trio features James Labrosse (guitar), Tripp Dudley (tabla), and Galen Passen (sitar). Their music traces a path from Punjab to Andalusia, weaving together sitar, tabla, and guitar into original compositions inspired by the Gitano diaspora and shaped by New York City’s vibrant musical landscape.

Since their 2023 debut, they’ve been featured at venues like Sisters and DROM, and have collaborated with Brooklyn Raga Massive.

Where does this music come from?
At the heart of North Indian classical music is theka, a rhythmic framework that offers a beautifully complex way of exploring time and polyrhythm. Across centuries and migrations—from South Asia through the Middle East into Europe—similar rhythmic ideas emerge in flamenco’s compás.

Compass Trio draws inspiration from this shared lineage. Their name reflects both meanings of “compass”: a tool for finding direction, and a musical structure that holds time—each, in its own way, a path toward “home.”

What's the music?

Compass Sitar, guitar, tabla

Compass Trio will present an evening of totally original music, strongly influenced by the traditions of hindustani classical music, flamenco, and jazz harmonies.

Where does this music come from?

The rhythmic form of North Indian music known as theka is a uniquely sophisticated container for exploring time and polyrhythm. Separated by hundreds of years and countless migrations, of the Gitano diaspora throughout present day Middle East and Europe we find the same concepts in new forms through the Spanish compás. This musical connection through history and culture is referenced in the name Compass; both a tool to find one’s way home as well as that which structures time in music, another form of finding “home”. Compass Trio is comprised of guitar (James Labrosse), tabla (Tripp Dudley), and sitar (Galen Passen) and integrates these deeper connections of tradition and music into its interweaving forms, reflections and improvisations. Each piece is a truly original creation, borne out of our own individual creative expressions while being deeply rooted in the extensive traditions that we have studied.
