What's the music?
This program juxtaposes two classic piano sonatas - German composer Ludwig van Beethoven's Sonata in E Major, Op. 109, a musical embodiment of spiritual peace in a earthly, human way, and Soviet composer Sergei Prokofiev's Sonata in B-flat, Op. 84, the final of his "war sonatas" written during the height and aftermath of World War II. On paper and in sound world, they are in complete opposite worlds - the Beethoven brimming with acceptance, love, inner life and the Prokofiev illustrating a destruction and dystopia much larger than an individual can comprehend. Yet they are very close to each other in their search for what a vulnerable existence means. Through experiencing these pieces I hope everyone has the chance to reconnect also with the extremes of their own humanity.
