Where does this music come from?
This program traces the evolution of the cello and piano partnership across three centuries, from Classical innovation to Romantic depth to folk-inspired modernism. Beethoven’s Sonata in G minor, Op. 5, written in 1796, helped redefine the cello sonata by giving the instrument equal weight with the piano. Brahms’s Sonata in E minor, Op. 38, composed in the 1860s, draws on Bach’s contrapuntal mastery while infusing the music with Romantic warmth and expressive power. Completing the journey, Georgian composer Sulkhan Tsintsadze’s Five Pieces on Folk Themes (1950) transforms traditional melodies into vivid character pieces with lyricism, wit, and fiery dance rhythms.
