*PROGRAM 60-75 minutes + 10 minute intermission *
J. S. Bach - Toccata in E minor
One of Bach's early works. Toccatas, at the time, were a way to show a performer's range and virtuosity. The fugue is very famous and several other Italian composers have used this same melody. It is ambiguous who is the "originator" of the melody.
L. Van Beethoven - Sonata in E minor, Op.90 no. 27
One of Beethoven's rare 2-movement sonatas, and the first one to feature very descriptive German tempo markings instead of the usual Italian. It was also a sonata written 5 years after Beethoven's previous piano sonata, a very long period of time - signifying the beginning of his "Late" period.
S. Rachmaninoff - Prelude op 23 no. 3 in D minor
Etude Tableaux op.33 no.4 in D minor
A view into Rachmaninoff compositions in the same key. The prelude is very overshadowed and not frequently performed. The etude is full of inner voicing and march-like rhythms.
Intermission
F. Chopin - Nocturne Op. 62 no. 2 in E major
Chopin's last nocturne published during his lifetime. It has call backs to Bach with its' contrapuntal tendencies, and is very harmonically complex.
R. Schumann - Symphonic Etudes (Études en forme de Variations) in C# minor
The main theme was written by an amateur pianist which Schumann took and adapted for the piano. The composition went through several revisions, of which the latest will be performed (Leipzig 1852).
