One of the great and mysterious powers of music is its capacity to evoke a sense of place - even a place otherwise unfamiliar to the listener. I’ve never been to Finland, but I could swear I’ve felt the cold Baltic winds whipping on my face as I sink into a Sibelius symphony. For those who’ve never been to Bohemia, Dvořák's romping scherzi give a portal in to the frenetic joy of that place. And for those that have, Bohemian memories are locked up in the fabric of those rhythms, those harmonies.
In times of quarantine, when we’re locked down in whatever place we were when it all began, this power of music can be positively liberating. We can journey far and wide with just a decent pair of headphones. The internationally renowned pianist Leon Livshin understands this power, and so, for our next Massivemuse, he’s preparing for us a tour around Central Europe.
So pack your bags (metaphorically) and let’s go on a trip together (while staying home and practicing strict social distancing)!
Our wonderful partners at the Aspect Chamber Music Series have made the concert possible — they find the best artists from around the world and Leon’s no exception: He’s won top prizes at major competitions, he’s played at Carnegie Hall, the Kennedy Center, and so many more. An intellectual and a deeply-feeling virtuoso, he’ll be taking us to Hungary with Bela Bartok and Franz Liszt, to Poland with Frederic Chopin, and to Austria with Johannes Brahms and Franz Schubert.
We’ll start with a Zoom at 7.30pm ET, then the live-stream at 8pm ET, and then back to Zoom for a Q&A with Leon afterward.
And it’s travel on the cheap! $3 to reserve a spot, and pay-what-you-want at the show.
Can’t wait to see you there!
